Essential trading terms
- Currency pair
- Two currencies quoted against each other, such as EUR/USD. The price shows how much of the second currency buys one unit of the first.
- Pip
- The standard unit of price change. For most pairs it is 0.0001; for pairs quoted against the Japanese yen it is 0.01.
- Spread
- The difference between the buy (ask) and sell (bid) price. It is a cost you pay on every trade.
- Lot
- A unit of trade size. A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; a mini lot is 10,000; a micro lot is 1,000.
- Leverage
- Borrowed exposure that lets you control a larger position with less capital. It magnifies losses as well as gains.
- Margin
- The amount your broker holds as collateral while a leveraged position is open.
- Stop-loss
- An order that closes your position at a set price to cap the loss if the market moves against you.
- Invalidation
- The price or condition that proves a trade idea wrong. Your stop-loss usually sits just beyond it.
- Position sizing
- Choosing trade size so that a loss at your stop equals a fixed, small share of your account.
- Drawdown
- A fall in account value from a previous peak. Recovering from a 50% drawdown needs a 100% gain.
- Market structure
- The pattern of highs and lows that shows whether a market is trending up, trending down or ranging.
- Liquidity
- How easily an instrument can be bought or sold without moving its price. Thin liquidity means wider spreads and more slippage.
